Police found evidence of cleaning in Shepherd’s apartment, but still discovered blood. Shepherd initially lied about her whereabouts, then, with the help of a community activist, led police to a dumpster (which had already been emptied). He confessed to strangling her and putting her body in the dumpster.

However, investigators later believed Shepherd dismembered and burned Stewart’s body on his balcony using two grills. Neighbors reported suspicious smells, smoke, and Shepherd’s unusual behavior, including constantly running water and the garbage disposal. Bone fragments and tooth enamel were found in his garbage disposal and on his patio.

At trial, Shepherd claimed self-defense, but was convicted of murder and sentenced to 99 years in prison. Kristen Stewart, a bright and accomplished young woman from a difficult background, tragically lost her life.
