Details of Disappearance:
In August 1999, a woman named Baker disappeared from her Washington D.C. home. Her boyfriend, Terrance Barnett, was the father of her twins. They had a troubled relationship; Barnett was abusive, and Baker had a restraining order against him that expired shortly before her disappearance.

Baker’s car was found abandoned, with her blood in the trunk. Ten years later, Barnett was arrested and charged with her murder. Evidence included Baker and Barnett’s DNA found mixed together in their home, which had been cleaned with bleach, and a sister’s testimony that she saw Barnett disposing of a large, wrapped object from his car trunk.

While Barnett’s lawyer argued for his innocence, pointing to the DNA of other men found in Baker’s car, Barnett was convicted of second-degree murder. The jury couldn’t prove premeditation (planning), so he wasn’t convicted of first-degree murder. The case was considered suspicious from the start, given the blood, the cleaned-up crime scene and the abusive relationship.
