- On September 5, 1980, diamond merchant Robert Walls vanished. He was last seen in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he’d been visiting family and attending a wedding. He had a briefcase full of over $100,000 worth of diamonds and gems, and planned to sell them locally.
Walls was driving a rented red or maroon 1980 Mercury Cougar (license plate ZCW 980). Later that day, his car was found abandoned, 500 miles away at a rest stop on the Florida Turnpike, with the keys in the ignition. Nothing suggested a crime at the scene, but the extra driving was unexplained.
Walls was a very successful businessman with property and businesses across several countries. He left all his belongings behind, suggesting he didn’t plan to disappear. Police think he might have been robbed. The case remains a mystery.
