- In early 1985, Alicia and her mother, Nilsa, disappeared from their Miami home. Nilsa’s daughters, Gloria and Bernisa, only reported them missing in 2010.
The family lived in a camper with Nilsa’s boyfriend, Jorge Walter Nunez (who they knew as Rafael Guzman). Nunez was abusive – physically and sexually abusing Gloria and Bernisa, and regularly abusing drugs and alcohol. The girls were often hungry.
According to Gloria and Bernisa, after Bernisa revealed Nunez’s abuse, Nunez beat Nilsa to death. The girls witnessed this. He put her body in a green bag, tried to make them bury her, then dismembered her and claimed he threw her in the sea. Nilsa’s body parts were later found on a Miami beach.
A few weeks later, Nunez allegedly hit Alicia after she didn’t finish her breakfast. He took her away, and she was never seen again. Gloria and Bernisa believe she was murdered, too.
Police didn’t take Gloria seriously until 2010, and Nilsa’s body wasn’t identified until 2012. Another unidentified man’s body was found nearby.
Nunez was later convicted of sexually abusing Gloria and Bernisa, imprisoned, and deported to Peru in 2004. He’s been charged with Nilsa’s murder, but his current whereabouts are unknown. He could be anywhere, possibly even back in the US under a different name. There’s an international warrant for his arrest.
Alicia’s sisters hope to find out what happened to both their mother and sister.
