Details of Disappearance:
Fourteen-year-old Coral went missing from Flint, Michigan on September 22, 1998, the day after her birthday. She lived with her grandmother, Lois Janish, and Janish’s boyfriend. Coral left her apartment to return a book and never came back.

That same day, Coral had gone to the Department of Human Services with a friend to report abuse by her grandmother. Later, she called the friend, saying she was in trouble and wanted to leave Flint. But when her friend arrived to pick her up, Coral was gone.

Coral had a difficult life. Her mother was a drug addict who died a few years before Coral disappeared, and her father was unknown. She and her grandmother were poor and often moved. The grandmother had been investigated multiple times for abusing or neglecting Coral. A friend said he witnessed abuse, and that Janish even offered him sex with Coral for drugs.

For years, police thought Coral had run away. But in 2013, her grandmother was arrested for her murder. Janish gave conflicting statements over the years, eventually confessing (and then retracting) to killing Coral with a hammer and disposing of her body with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend died before he could be charged. Janish pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to nine years in prison. Because she was already elderly, she might die before being released.

Coral’s body has never been found.
