- Details of Disappearance:
- Cyndi Vanderheiden vanished in Clements, California, in November 1998. Two men, Loren Herzog and Wesley Shermantine, were arrested in 1999 and convicted of her murder and several others in 2001. Shermantine got the death penalty, while Herzog received a long prison sentence. However, Herzog’s conviction was later overturned, and he got a much shorter sentence. He was released from prison in 2010 and then killed himself in 2012.
After Herzog’s death, Shermantine offered to help police find the bodies of Vanderheiden and other victims if he got paid. He claimed he didn’t actually kill anyone but helped Herzog get rid of the bodies. Police followed his lead, finding the remains of Chevelle Wheeler and Vanderheiden’s skull near his old property. They also discovered hundreds of bones and personal belongings in an old well, identifying some victims as Joann Hobson and Kimberly Billy.
