- In August 1999, Dakota Menger disappeared with his mom, Dayna, and her friend, Junelle Marquard. They were last seen in Nekoosa, Wisconsin, after dropping off Dayna’s other daughter at a babysitter’s. They left without explanation.
The babysitter wasn’t worried at first, as Dayna sometimes left her daughter for days. But when weeks went by with no contact, she called authorities. Dayna’s daughter was placed in care and later adopted.
Dayna and Junelle had drug problems and were distant from their families. Police weren’t told about the disappearances until 2004, when Dayna’s brother reported her missing. Junelle was never officially reported missing but is part of the investigation.
Dayna might have connections to Milwaukee. While they had minor criminal records, police don’t think they ran away to avoid the law. The possibility of foul play exists. Dayna’s family believes she wouldn’t have abandoned her children.
The case remains unsolved.
