Details of Disappearance:
Ellabeth Lodermeier vanished from her Sioux Falls, South Dakota home on March 6, 1974. Her boyfriend, who was out of town that day, tried calling her several times but only reached her upstairs neighbor.

Ellabeth was separating from her husband, Gene, and they were heading for a divorce. The next morning, her co-workers reported her missing. Gene found her home undisturbed except for her coat and purse missing, and some unfinished food in the kitchen.

Later, her credit cards turned up in Canada, far from Sioux Falls, likely planted as a distraction. Years later, her purse and checkbook were found near the Big Sioux River. Despite searches, no trace of Ellabeth was ever found.

Gene, who was the last person to see Ellabeth, is considered a person of interest. He had a history of controlling and abusive behavior towards Ellabeth, including sabotaging her car to prevent her from attending college. The divorce trial was set for just three weeks after her disappearance.

After Ellabeth disappeared, Gene had several run-ins with the law, including a 45-year prison sentence for grand theft. He also faced accusations (though never convicted) of violence against police officers. He died in 2013 without ever explaining what happened to Ellabeth.

Ellabeth’s family suspected foul play, and her case remains unsolved.
