Details of Disappearance:
Rawley disappeared on November 8, 1953, from Summum, Illinois. He was last seen leaving his girlfriend’s apartment in Macomb at 7:50 pm. His girlfriend had recently reconciled with her ex-husband, even though she and Rawley had planned to marry.

When police checked Rawley’s house, it looked like there had been a fight – a lamp was knocked over, and his glasses were left behind. His new green 1953 Cadillac was also gone. Someone saw the car near a nearby coal mine that night, but couldn’t say who was driving. Rawley often visited the mine.

Rawley was a wealthy former bank president known for spending freely and having many girlfriends. He often carried a lot of cash. His divorce was finalized the day he disappeared, and his wife moved to Michigan afterward. He had made enemies because of his relationships and his habit of lending money.

In the weeks before his disappearance, Rawley was attacked – assaulted, his car was damaged with acid, and someone tried to run him over twice.

Police searched the Key Coal Co. strip mine twice (in 1956 and 1962) but found nothing. Rawley’s disappearance remains a mystery.
