- Details of Disappearance:
- On April 3, 1961, a police officer named Hawkins disappeared. He lived above his general store in Persimmon Grove, Kentucky. That morning, he had breakfast with his daughter, said goodbye to his wife, and drove off in his tan 1959 Plymouth station wagon.
He called home at 1:00 p.m., saying he’d been to his lawyer’s about a tax audit and was heading home. He never arrived.
Four days later, his car was found abandoned by a river in Dayton, Ohio. The car was strangely cleaned, looking like someone had rinsed it with muddy water and wiped it down. The keys were still in the ignition. Hawkins was gone.
Police think organized crime was involved. Hawkins was taking bribes from gamblers, but apparently raised his prices too high. They suspect he was killed because of it, but no one has ever been arrested for his disappearance, which remains a mystery.
