A short way into the trail, some fallen trees blocked their path. McDonald decided to go back to the lodge, while the others continued.
After about 30 minutes, the others returned to the lodge and found McDonald missing. Her car was still there, with her purse and belongings inside – nothing was stolen. Despite extensive searches, she was never found.
McDonald was a newspaper reporter who lived in Mena, Arkansas. She wasn’t known to be a big fan of hiking. She had a Minolta camera with her (serial number 40907425). Her disappearance remains a mystery.
