Details of Disappearance:
On February 19, 2001, Santoso disappeared from his apartment in Kirkland, Washington. Neighbors heard loud noises—breaking glass, banging, screams—around 10:45 PM, followed by a car speeding away. His apartment door was open, a window was smashed, and there was a lot of blood inside and outside.

Santoso’s car was found at the Seattle-Tacoma airport; the parking ticket showed he arrived at 11:51 PM. His blood was in the car, along with a bloody palm print outside. He didn’t take a flight.

A month earlier, Santoso reported being assaulted by Kim Heichel Mason (also known as Hiiro Takashi Riser or Brian Allen Mason), a kickboxer. Mason choked, tied up, and threatened Santoso, demanding money. Santoso, who was bisexual, had a previous relationship with Mason, according to Santoso and two witnesses, though Mason denied it. Santoso feared Mason and had a restraining order against him.

Two months after Santoso vanished, Mason was charged with his murder. Police believed Mason killed Santoso in his apartment, disposed of the body, and left the car at the airport to look like a getaway. The motive was likely to stop Santoso from testifying against him in the assault case.

Mason’s girlfriend, Marina Madrid, said she picked him up from the airport that night; he had a bandage on his leg and said, “Santos is no longer a problem.” She saw him throw away bloody clothes and a knife. She initially lied to protect him but later confessed after getting immunity.

Although Mason’s blood and fingerprints weren’t found in the apartment, his blood *was* in Santoso’s car, and Santoso’s blood was in Madrid’s car. The shoe prints at the crime scene were too large for Mason. A bloody palm print on the car wasn’t his. Despite this, Mason was convicted of murder in 2003 and sentenced to life in prison. He claims he’s innocent, but Santoso’s body has never been found. Santoso was an Indonesian immigrant working as a nursing assistant, supporting his family back home. His disappearance is considered a murder.
