- Samitsch disappeared while sailing. He set off alone from Marathon, Florida, in his old (1972), 39-foot sailboat. His boat’s engine didn’t work, and he had very little navigation equipment. He was going to Panama to see family before Christmas, but he never arrived and hasn’t been seen or heard from since. It’s believed he was lost at sea.
