- In January 2011, Isabel and Gabriel were taken from their home in Culpeper, Virginia, by their mom, Maria Rivera-Estevez. Their parents were divorcing, and Maria didn’t have permission to take them. She fled to the Dominican Republic with the children.
Maria is Hispanic, about 5’4″ tall and 125 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes (a photo is available). Their dad, Robert Makielski, tried to work things out peacefully, but Maria ignored him. He went to court, but the Dominican court wouldn’t send the children back, even though a Virginia court later gave Robert full custody. Maria claimed Robert abused the children, a claim he denies.
Robert was threatened and couldn’t safely attend court hearings in the Dominican Republic. Even though there’s a warrant for Maria’s arrest, and a court order giving Robert custody, he hasn’t seen his children since 2011. They are believed to be in Santo Domingo, and the case remains unsolved.
