- Details of Disappearance:
- Irwin disappeared on July 21, 1995, after going fishing on Birch Lake in Cassopolis, Michigan. He often fished late at night but always came home. This time, he didn’t.
His boat was found empty near a campground, with his belongings (wallet, clothes, fishing gear, and a whiskey bottle) still inside. His truck was parked at the boat launch. A neighbor saw his empty boat circling in the lake around 2:00 a.m. that night, but didn’t think anything of it at the time. The boat’s motor was off when it was found.
Irwin had mentioned possibly going swimming, but his wife didn’t think he would swim in the open lake. Divers searched the deep, clear lake (up to 100 feet deep) for eight days, but found no trace of him.
Police found no evidence of a crime or that he disappeared on purpose. They think he likely drowned.
