- Details of Disappearance:
- In July 1993, Ruben Perez went to a barbecue in Bexar County, Texas, with his friend Jack Lee King. Later that night, King said Perez left with some women in a silver car at an Exxon gas station. However, witnesses at the barbecue say King shot Perez at close range and drove away with his body in the car. Although many people saw the shooting, no one called the police until 1996.
King was eventually charged with Perez’s murder in 2008. He was already facing trial for two other murders. King claimed Perez was a gang member and drug dealer, but Perez’s girlfriend denied this. At King’s trial in 2009, he changed his story, claiming he last saw Perez at the gas station with a woman in a different car (brown or maroon Oldsmobile). Witnesses testified against him, and he was convicted, receiving a 60-year sentence (15 years before parole eligibility). Charges in the other murders were dropped due to lack of evidence. Perez’s body was never found.
