- Details of Disappearance:
- On August 6, 1989, in Brownsville, Texas, 17-year-old Ramirez was kidnapped at gunpoint from his home. Two men, pretending to be police officers, forced him into their car. They told his parents they were taking him to the police station, but he never arrived. Ramirez has been missing ever since.
Investigators believe the powerful drug lord Juan Garcia Abrego ordered the kidnapping and murder. Abrego wanted revenge for the death of his girlfriend’s son. He hired three men – Daniel Rodriguez, Julio Gonzalez, and Feliz Moyet Sanchez – to carry out the crime. Rodriguez was caught and sent to prison for life. Gonzalez is in Colombia, fighting being sent back to the US. Sanchez has never been found.
Abrego was convicted on drug charges and got eleven life sentences, but was never charged with Ramirez’s kidnapping, even though Ramirez’s parents won a $6 million court judgment against him. It’s unlikely they’ll ever see the money.
Ramirez was a star high school athlete with a bright future. His family believes he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and had nothing to do with drugs. The police believe he was murdered.
