- Details of Disappearance:
- On December 7, 2016, Kaitlyn Blom and her family were flying from Port Alsworth, Alaska, to Anchorage for a school volleyball tournament. They were in a small plane piloted by Kyle Longerbeam. The family decided to take this smaller plane instead of a commercial flight at the last minute. Only Kaitlyn, her father Scott, and brother Zachary went on this flight; her mother and other brothers traveled separately.
The plane disappeared and never reached Anchorage. Searchers believe it crashed into Lake Clark. They found some pieces of the plane (a seat, wheels, and belongings) floating in the lake, but the rest of the plane and the passengers are still missing.
The pilot wasn’t fully qualified to fly in bad weather. Although the weather was good at takeoff, there was thick fog along their flight path. Investigators think this fog might have caused the crash, but they can’t be sure because they haven’t found the plane’s wreckage.
Kaitlyn, her father, brother, and the pilot are presumed dead, but officially they are still listed as missing because their bodies haven’t been found. Because Lake Clark is very deep, finding them is unlikely.
