- LaShawnda’s parents fought violently. In December 1990, her father hurt her badly during one fight, and child protective services (DSS) stepped in. Because neither parent was deemed safe, LaShawnda lived with her grandmother and then in foster care before moving in with her paternal grandmother in June 1991.
That August, her father took her without permission. He later called her mother, and she believed she heard him hurting LaShawnda. The police were called, but couldn’t find them. The father gave conflicting stories about what happened to LaShawnda and whether she was alive or dead.
He was arrested in September 1991 for kidnapping, but LaShawnda wasn’t with him. After his arrest, he confessed to killing her. What happened in court is unknown, and LaShawnda has never been found.
