- Details of Disappearance:
- In November 1996, Garcia, a Mexican immigrant working at a California rice noodle factory, disappeared. He’d been demanding back wages from the factory owner, Kim Mektrakarn, who exploited undocumented workers. Garcia threatened to report Mektrakarn unless he was paid $5,000. Mektrakarn agreed to a payment plan, but Garcia was last seen at the factory trying to collect $3,000.
Garcia’s cousins, who also worked there, saw Mektrakarn at the factory that day. Mektrakarn had rented a van. Later, witnesses saw several people in the factory office, including Garcia and Mektrakarn. Then, one cousin was mysteriously sent away from the office to clean. When he returned, he saw men hiding inside. The van was gone. Garcia’s car was later found abandoned, and he never showed up for dinner or a planned trip to Mexico.
Police found evidence of a struggle at the factory: a damaged and bloodstained carpet (with pieces found in a dumpster), cleaning supplies, and two handguns. Mektrakarn had injuries on his hands. His rental van was found cleaned and bleached in Nevada.
Mektrakarn was initially arrested but released due to lack of evidence. Years later, DNA confirmed the blood at the factory was Garcia’s. Further forensic testing revealed more blood spatter, suggesting a violent attack and disposal of the body. Mektrakarn was re-arrested, but remains at large in Thailand.
The factory manager, Plengsangtip, was also charged as an accessory, but acquitted. Garcia’s body has never been found. The case strongly suggests he was murdered.
