- On November 4, 1995, Boone and her boyfriend, Hoyle Smith, disappeared from Smith’s house in Sanford, North Carolina. Police found blood in the house, which looked like it had been robbed.
Five days later, Donald Abercrombie had a long standoff with police in Fayetteville. He eventually gave up and admitted to being involved. He was initially sentenced for the standoff, but DNA evidence linked him to the crime scene.
Abercrombie confessed to killing Smith and Boone, saying he buried them in the woods near his home. He was found guilty of two counts of murder and sentenced to two life sentences in prison, even though the prosecution wanted the death penalty. His family said he’d had a difficult childhood.
Despite Abercrombie’s confession, the bodies of Smith and Boone have never been found.
