In February 2003, a mom and her boyfriend kidnapped their two children, Mariana and her baby half-brother Edgardo, from Nashville, Tennessee. They ran away after being accused of killing Mariana’s older brother, Luis, who was four years old. Luis was tortured and killed, and his body was found in a park.

The police searched for the mom and boyfriend for three years. The boyfriend was even on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. Finally, in February 2006, they were caught in Mexico. Mariana and Edgardo were found safe – Mariana was with her mom in one Mexican city, and Edgardo was with his dad in another.

Now, the mom and boyfriend are waiting to be sent back to the U.S. to face trial. It’s not certain when or if Mariana and Edgardo will come back to the U.S., but it’s likely since Edgardo was born in Tennessee (making him an American citizen) and Mariana’s dad lives in the U.S.
