- Details of Disappearance:
- On June 22, 1961, a woman named Mertz disappeared from her Lancaster, Pennsylvania apartment. She’d had a big fight with her husband that night. He went out for cigarettes, and when he came back, she was gone.
She’d left before after arguments, but always contacted family. This time, she vanished. Her husband went to Florida to see his sister after borrowing money from Mertz’s brother. A neighbor heard the argument but said it wasn’t unusual and didn’t sound violent.
Mertz’s husband said she took a suitcase, but couldn’t remember what was in it; she left behind a new outfit and a lot of money in the bank – about $8,000-$9,000. A friend said Mertz had talked about secretly leaving one day because she was so tired of fighting with her husband.
No one knows what happened to Mertz. She was declared legally dead after seven years, but her disappearance remains a mystery.
