- On June 23, 2001, Kubo, a retired engineer, left his Honolulu condo for a walk. He was known to take multiple walks daily, often to watch fishermen at Kakaako Waterfront Park. His wife didn’t think anything of it when he left.
However, Kubo never came back. He had a history of getting lost during walks; once needing a neighbor’s help after a fall, and another time ending up far from home on a short walk.
The next day, around 1:00 a.m., a security guard saw someone matching Kubo’s description at a hotel in Chinatown. This man, who said his name was Masa, gave a disconnected phone number and seemed confused. The guard put him in a cab to a Waikiki hotel. Later, seeing a missing person poster, the guard realized it was likely Kubo.
There were other possible sightings, including one in downtown Honolulu, but none were confirmed. Police don’t think anything bad happened to Kubo. They think he might still be alive, perhaps living on the streets or with someone who’s helping him. Kubo’s disappearance remains a mystery.
