- Mayra disappeared in Sarasota, Florida. The last time anyone saw her was January 10, 2006, when she got off the school bus near Booker Middle School. She didn’t come home that day.
Two weeks later, on January 16th, she called her parents to say she was safe in the U.S., but wouldn’t say where. That was the last anyone heard from her.
Police think Mayra left on her own and may be in Mexico with a male friend. They haven’t found this friend, and no one has been charged with anything related to her disappearance. The case is still unsolved.
During the investigation, police discovered Mayra’s family was in the U.S. illegally and reported them to immigration. The family was told to leave the country or face deportation.
Mayra lived on Pelau Circle in Sarasota and was a good student; running away was out of character for her.
