- Details of Disappearance:
- Champagne disappeared in 1993. The last time her parents spoke to her was March 9th, 1993, while she was in Washington D.C. after a trip to Belgium with her boyfriend. She planned to go home to Spokane, Washington, but never arrived.
Champagne had moved to the US in 1990 with her American husband, whom she met in Belgium. They divorced in late 1992. Her ex-husband described her as independent and strong-willed, and she worked as a cook or waitress.
Before disappearing, she got a large sum of money wired from her father in Belgium, even though she’d already received $60,000 in her divorce. She said she needed it to pay a debt.
Her boyfriend, Darryl Matlen, reported her missing in September 1993, but claimed to have seen her in June riding a motorcycle in Spokane. Suspiciously, between March and September, Matlen used Champagne’s credit cards, sold her furniture, and sold their car. Police found he’d returned to Spokane alone on March 12th.
In 2011, police reopened the case, collecting DNA from Champagne’s family to compare with unidentified remains. The case remains unsolved.
