- Ayah’s dad, Hamdi, didn’t have legal custody of her, but he took her from their home in Jersey City on July 27, 2003, and secretly took her to Egypt. Since the US and Egypt didn’t have a deal to send criminals back and forth, getting Ayah back was tricky. The US tricked Hamdi by promising him a green card (permission to live in the US) if he returned with Ayah. When they arrived in the US, Hamdi was arrested, and Ayah was finally reunited with her mom. Sadly, Ayah was so young when she was taken that she didn’t remember her mother.
