He was originally from Yugoslavia, came to the US in 1950, and became a citizen in 1958. He was well-educated, with degrees in finance and foreign trade from UCLA, and also studied business in Arizona.
He lived in Mexico City for a while with his second wife (they divorced in 1972 after having a third child), before returning to Los Angeles.
