- Nikole’s mother died in a car accident in 1977. Nikole and her father, Jarrett, survived. Jarrett and Nikole’s mom were never married. Soon after, Jarrett started dating Barbara, and they moved west, possibly to California or Las Vegas. Nikole’s grandparents last saw her around Christmas 1977, and then lost contact with Jarrett and Nikole completely.
In 1997, the grandparents hired a detective who found Jarrett and Barbara in Las Vegas, but not Nikole. There was no record of Nikole after she left Michigan, except for her receiving orphan benefits until she turned 18 (which Jarrett collected).
The police investigated but found nothing. Jarrett initially claimed to know what happened to Nikole but never told them. He and Barbara then died by suicide, he killing her first. Before her death, Barbara sent a letter apologizing to Nikole’s grandmother.
Because Jarrett and Barbara are dead, the mystery of what happened to Nikole remains unsolved. Police suspect foul play.
