This was unusual; she never left without telling anyone, and never missed work. There were no signs of robbery or suicide.

Her son, Paresh, lived with her and had a history of anger issues and past physical abuse towards his mother (though she never reported it). He used several different names. Shortly after Promila disappeared, Paresh was caught trying to sneak into Mexico with no belongings. He refused to answer questions about his mother’s whereabouts. He also left his own car at her house without its license plate.

Promila’s divorce from her husband, Shashi, was messy and involved many years of legal battles over money. While Shashi and two of Promila’s other sons were cleared, Paresh became the prime suspect. Police found evidence suggesting Promila was murdered, and Paresh was likely responsible.

Later, Paresh was sent to prison for five years for forgery – he falsely claimed to be a high-ranking official at his mother’s company and sold one of their cars.

Despite the suspicion, Promila’s case remains unsolved.
