Details of Disappearance:
Rose disappeared after running away from Synanon, a controversial drug rehab center in Oakland, California, sometime between late 1972 and mid-1973. A judge had sent her there because she had a drug problem and kept running away.

After escaping, Rose wrote two letters to her family saying she was okay and living on the streets in San Francisco’s Chinatown. She was sick, but promised to contact them when she turned 18, fearing Synanon would force her back. She never did.

Synanon was a very strict organization, often described as a cult. Members gave up all their belongings and were expected to stay forever. Leaving was risky; former members reported harassment and violence. The government eventually shut it down in 1989.

While Rose’s disappearance is officially considered a runaway case, it’s unusual she’s had no contact with her family for so long. Her family wants to know she’s safe. The mystery remains unsolved.
