- Details of Disappearance:
- On September 1, 2000, Tara Hughes left her home in Aliceville, Alabama, with her boyfriend, Renard Simmons. It was her due date, but she wasn’t in labor. She told her sister she wouldn’t be long, but also said something unsettling: “If you don’t ever see me again, don’t worry because I have lived my life to the fullest.”
Police stopped Simmons’s car a short time later, around 1 a.m., in nearby Pickensville. This was the last time anyone saw Hughes. Simmons claimed he dropped her off back home around 3 a.m., but her sister said she never returned.
Later, Hughes’s purse and slippers were found near the Alabama-Mississippi state line. Despite a big search, she was never found.
Simmons, who reportedly didn’t want Hughes to have the baby and was angry she refused an abortion, didn’t help look for her after she disappeared. Her family and the police believe she was murdered. She was declared legally dead in 2008, and Simmons died in 2013. The case remains unsolved.
