- On July 29, 2019, a neighbor saw Robert Camou force his girlfriend, Custer, into the trunk of his car (a gray 2017 Toyota Prius, license plate 8AOR167) in Monrovia, California. Custer appeared to be unconscious or injured. Police found blood at the scene, suggesting a violent assault.
Camou’s car was then seen heading towards Mount Baldy. Later that evening, he went to a bar in Los Angeles, rapped about killing a woman, and said he was wanted by the police. He was arrested the next morning after a standoff but Custer was not with him.
Camou was initially charged with burglary, then with Custer’s murder. Police found blood in his car and a shovel, suggesting he may have buried her body. Her body has never been found.
Camou and Custer had a violent two-year relationship. He was already out on bail for assaulting Custer earlier that year (he’d tried to strangle her, threatened her with a taser, and attacked a man who tried to help her). Because of this prior assault, the murder charge includes the added seriousness of killing a witness. Camou is awaiting trial for murder.
