- Details of Disappearance:
- Amy Billig disappeared in Coconut Grove, Florida on March 5, 1974. She was hitchhiking to her dad’s office to borrow money for a night out with friends, but she never arrived.
Several people claimed to have information about Amy’s disappearance. Twin brothers falsely claimed to have kidnapped her for ransom. Tips suggested involvement from motorcycle gangs, the Outlaws and Pagans, with some saying she was alive, others saying she was dead. Amy’s mom, Susan, spent years searching for her, following leads across the country and even to Great Britain. Amy might have used different names while with the bikers.
A Pagan gang member, Paul Branch, initially said Amy was alive, but later (according to his widow), claimed she died of an overdose at a gang party and her body was disposed of in the Everglades.
Amy’s camera was found, but the photos were mostly unusable. Susan also received years of harassing phone calls from a man who claimed Amy was in a sex ring. This man was eventually caught and identified as Henry Blair, a U.S. Customs employee. Blair’s nickname was “Hank,” the same name Amy used for a man she mentioned in her journal as possibly running away with. A photo from Amy’s camera showed a van matching Blair’s, and Blair’s job took him to South America around the time Amy mentioned in her journal. However, there’s no direct proof linking Blair to Amy’s disappearance beyond his harassment of Susan.
Susan Billig dedicated her life to finding Amy, writing a book about it, but Amy’s case remains unsolved. Susan passed away in 2005.
