- Details of Disappearance:
- On April 17, 1938, Andrew, a skilled pilot, took off in his small plane from Long Island, New York, for a short flight. He was expected back in 15 minutes, but disappeared. His plane was never found, despite having enough fuel for a much longer trip.
Adding to the mystery, Andrew checked into a hotel under a false name, leaving behind all his belongings—passport, clothes, valuable papers, and even life insurance policies naming his wife as beneficiary. A phone call he made while his family searched for him seemed ominous: he reportedly said, “I’m going to carry out my plan.”
Police suspected suicide, but a thorough search found no wreckage. There was no indication of personal or financial troubles. His wife sued him for desertion, not believing he’d abandoned her, but hoping to raise awareness of his disappearance. Amazingly, many people claimed to have seen him years later across the country.
Andrew was a Princeton graduate, a successful businessman, and related to the famous Andrew Carnegie. Though declared legally dead in 1946, his case remains unsolved and continues to fascinate.
