- Details of Disappearance:
- Ann Marie disappeared on December 3, 1995, from Manassas, Virginia. She had two children with her former boyfriend, Walter Godbey, who was ordered to pay child support after Ann Marie won custody that year. Walter claimed Ann Marie took their children to his house and then left for the Philippines to visit her mother.
However, Ann Marie’s sister, Jewel, suspected Walter. She said they’d argued before Ann Marie vanished, and that Ann Marie didn’t have a passport, and her mother was already dead.
Things got clearer when Walter was arrested and convicted for murdering another man in 2001. His wife, Carla, then told police that Walter confessed to killing Ann Marie, saying he’d dismembered her body and buried it. A search didn’t find anything.
Walter, already serving 30 years for the other murder, was later charged with Ann Marie’s death. He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter (accidental death) and got an additional 10 years. Jewel believed Walter abused Ann Marie and that the sentence was too light. Police believe foul play was involved in Ann Marie’s disappearance, but couldn’t prove a planned murder.
