- Details of Disappearance:
- In 2004, after moving to California from Arkansas following a divorce, a woman named Pitzer disappeared. She initially told her mother she was working as a waitress, but later confessed she’d been homeless and living in shelters. She then got a job as a caregiver and planned a bus trip back to Arkansas to see her kids and maybe reconcile with her ex-husband.
Pitzer was last seen on June 28, 2004, near Newberry Springs, California. Someone gave her a ride to the bus station, but she never reached Arkansas. Her mother reported her missing in July.
Rumors circulated that she’d been murdered and thrown down a mine shaft. Police searched many mines, but found nothing. Eight months later, someone tried to get a phone in her name in New Mexico.
In late 2005, police discovered some of Pitzer’s belongings scattered across a wide area in the remote Mojave Desert. Her nightgown was found tied in a hangman’s noose in a mining shack, and other items, including a blood-stained mattress, were found in a mine shaft. However, the clothing was too weathered to provide much evidence.
The police have no suspects, and there’s no proof Pitzer is dead, though her mother suspects foul play. Pitzer’s mother believes her daughter’s past as a federal informant (she helped put a man in prison for seven years) may be linked to her disappearance. The wife of that man knew people Pitzer had been with in California. Two men connected to the case have since died.
Pitzer’s case remains unsolved, and California police continue to investigate.
