- Details of Disappearance:
- On December 5, 1979, 19-year-old Carolyn Bockwith disappeared from Pensacola, Florida. She had a normal morning, having breakfast with a friend and then going to her University of West Florida class. However, she never made it to her accounting class, though friends saw her on campus earlier that day and later driving away.
A week later, her red Toyota was found at the Pensacola airport. The driver’s seat was pushed all the way back, suggesting a taller person had been driving. Her purse was missing, her textbooks were in the backseat (not where she usually kept them), and her $1500 remained untouched in her bank account – all odd details.
Bockwith had a troubled history with her ex-boyfriend, Mack Deaver, a jealous and violent man. She had filed police reports against him twice, once for assaulting her new boyfriend and once for damaging her car and assaulting her. They had resumed their relationship just before her disappearance, a fact her parents didn’t know. Deaver had threatened her, saying he would hurt her if he caught her with someone else.
Although he initially helped search for Bockwith, Deaver was scheduled for a lie detector test regarding her disappearance. He missed the appointment and was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He left a note for his mother but it didn’t mention Bockwith. It’s unclear if he was considered a suspect.
Bockwith’s disappearance was completely out of character; she was a successful, high-achieving student who always told her family her plans. Investigators believe she is dead, but her case remains unsolved.
