A month later, their car was found wrecked and buried in snow in the San Gabriel Mountains. There was no sign of violence. Police think it might have been deliberately pushed down a mountain or accidentally hit by a snowplow. The road had been closed since the day after they vanished.
Rumors circulated about Carmen being involved in a strange religious group or Diego having gotten into trouble with drugs or gambling and fleeing to Miami. But none of these theories could be proven.
Since then, no one has seen Barbara, Carmen, or Diego. Their disappearance remains a mystery.
