Details of Disappearance:
On December 13, 1980, Betty and Louis Balas disappeared from their Los Angeles home. They were last seen between 6:15 and 9:00 pm. Their front door was open, keys were in the lock, the TV was on, and the bathtub was full, but there were no signs of a fight. Their car, a maroon 1978 Cadillac, was the only thing missing. The car was found abandoned the next day a few miles away.

The disappearance happened the day before Louis was to testify against Larry Boyce, a dangerous man with a history of violence who had previously robbed and threatened Louis. Boyce was on trial for many serious crimes, including kidnapping Louis. While police suspected Boyce was involved in the Balases’ disappearance, it was never proven. Boyce was later convicted of other charges and sent to prison.

Investigators think several people, maybe even three, including a possibly pregnant woman, were involved in the Balases’ disappearance. The case remains a mystery.
