- On August 3, 2017, a man named Slaughter disappeared while camping in the New Mexico wilderness. He was near Cottonwood Canyon, east of McGaffey and southwest of Thoreau. He left his campsite and friends, and nobody has seen him since. Even though he knew the area well, a search couldn’t find him. The mystery of what happened to him remains unsolved.
