- On October 3, 2019, at 3:30 a.m., Steffler was seen at Kaunakakai Harbor in Hawaii. A security camera showed him walking to the end of a pier, leaving some things behind, then swimming away. He swam about 750 yards south and disappeared from view. He never came back. His belongings were found by the harbormaster at 6:00 a.m. and given to the police. Police searched everywhere but couldn’t find him, and the mystery of what happened to him remains unsolved.
