- Distinguishing Characteristics Caucasian female. Brown hair, hazel eyes. Carlene wore braces and ironed her hair straight at the time of her disappearance. She has a brown freckle on her neck below her chin, a small mole on her left cheek, and a chipped front tooth.
- Details of Disappearance:
- Carlene disappeared from Macon, Georgia on June 21, 1972. She was 16, a rising junior in high school, and went alone to a shopping center in her family’s car – a white 1963 Pontiac station wagon. It was the first time she’d driven by herself.
Her plan was to pick up her younger sister from day camp, but she never returned. She saw friends at the shopping center, left a note for her boyfriend at his workplace nearby, and then vanished.
Her family reported her missing, but the police waited 24 hours before starting a search. Her car was found the next day, unlocked and with the windows down – unusual for Carlene, her family said. There was no sign of her.
Her family moved to North Carolina a year later, leaving a phone number behind in case she called. They returned to Macon in 1977, but Carlene was never found. Her father has passed away, and her mother died in 2016, but her sister still lives in the Macon area and hopes for answers. Carlene’s case remains a mystery.
