- In December 1969, cocktail waitress Susan Hallock disappeared from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She’d told her sister-in-law she was meeting a male junior college teacher for a possible high-paying job involving international travel. She planned to wear a black dress and black high heels.
Hallock vanished after this meeting. Her car was found abandoned, her apartment showed signs of a hurried departure (missing keys, license, registration; a full bathtub; unfed dog; missing outfit), and she was never seen again.
Four years later, police found two of Hallock’s gold teeth and a pin among the belongings of Gerard Schaefer, a former police officer convicted of murdering two other women. Schaefer was suspected of many other unsolved disappearances and murders of young women. He’d even written a story about a woman in a black dress and high heels, which authorities believed was connected to Hallock’s case.
Although Schaefer was a suspect, he was never charged with Hallock’s disappearance. He was later murdered in prison in 1995, ending any further investigation into her case. To this day, Susan Hallock remains missing and her case is unsolved.
