The next morning, they were reported missing. Their boat was found drifting, empty, about ten miles from Mackinac Island. The radio was on, lights were off, and their phones, shoes, and life jackets were still on board. A boat knob was found stuck in Lana’s shoe.

Two weeks later, Lana’s body washed ashore. She was wearing only jewelry and had high levels of carbon monoxide in her blood, suggesting she may have been overcome by fumes while swimming. Her death was ruled as drowning.

Both Lana and Rutherford were experienced boaters and strong swimmers, but the water, while fine for boating, might have been too rough for swimming that day. Some loved ones suspect foul play, while authorities believe it was an accidental drowning. Rutherford is still missing.
