Details of Disappearance:
In November 1921, a decorated war hero named Whittlesey disappeared. He was traveling from New York to Cuba on a passenger ship. He seemed happy and well that evening, having dinner with the captain. But later that night, he went to bed and was never seen again.

He’d left behind letters for his family and friends, and instructions for the captain about his belongings. He’d also settled his affairs at home, written a will, and paid his rent in advance – all suggesting he might have planned his disappearance.

It’s believed he jumped overboard and committed suicide, but nobody witnessed it, and his body was never found. The letters gave no clues as to why he did it.

Whittlesey had a successful life: he graduated from prestigious colleges, served bravely in World War I (earning the Congressional Medal of Honor), and had a thriving law practice. He was a respected man who never married.

Because so much time has passed, the case is closed and remains a mystery.
