- Details of Disappearance:
- On March 14, 2006, a group of friends in Kauai, Hawaii, were celebrating an upcoming wedding and a birthday when disaster struck. After weeks of heavy rain, a very old dam broke, releasing a huge amount of water. This flood swept away several people, including the soon-to-be-married couple, their friends, and a child.
Some bodies were recovered, but four people – including the groom-to-be – are still missing and presumed drowned.
The dam’s owner, a wealthy businessman, was found responsible. He had ignored the law requiring regular dam inspections, and even blocked inspectors from checking his dam. He was eventually convicted of reckless endangerment, and his company paid a large fine. However, the fine went to the state for dam safety improvements, not to the families of the victims. The owner received a short jail sentence but was released early due to health problems.
