- On January 20, 2003, Smith disappeared in San Diego. He was a good sailor who usually stayed close to shore. His 20-foot sailboat was seen leaving its spot at De Anza Cove around 12:45 p.m. that day. Later, the boat was found sailing by itself, two miles from La Jolla. Smith wasn’t on the boat, and nobody has seen or heard from him since. He may have drowned, but his body was never found.
