- Details of Disappearance:
- On May 25, 2003, Acacia, a baby girl, was kidnapped by her grandmother, Kelley Jean Lodmell, from her great-grandparents’ home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lodmell had previously taken Acacia without permission. She was supposed to be supervising Acacia during a visit, but she escaped with the baby when her great-grandmother briefly left the room.
Lodmell and Acacia were last seen in Idaho Falls, Idaho, near the Snake River. Lodmell told people at a nearby hydroelectric plant that she’d accidentally dropped Acacia in the river. The plant was shut down to prevent Acacia from being pulled into the turbines. Divers searched the river, but only found baby shoes, a doll, and one of Lodmell’s shoes. Police believe Acacia drowned, and that it wasn’t an accident; Lodmell was soaking wet when she claimed Acacia fell in, suggesting she jumped in with the baby in a possible murder-suicide attempt.
Lodmell has a history of mental illness (schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), substance abuse, and a criminal record including assault. She wasn’t taking her medication at the time of the abduction. While Lodmell confessed to killing Acacia, Acacia’s parents believe she’s lying to hide the baby. They point to letters from Lodmell referring to Acacia in the present tense, and her purchasing baby supplies shortly before the alleged drowning. Police investigated the possibility that Lodmell gave Acacia away, but found no evidence.
A sketch of a man who may have been with Lodmell and Acacia has been released, but police don’t believe he’s involved.
Lodmell was tried for kidnapping, but found not guilty by reason of insanity. The judge believed she was delusional and thought she was rescuing Acacia from an abusive situation. Lodmell was committed to a mental hospital, but it’s unlikely she’ll ever be released. The murder charges were dropped, but could be reinstated if she’s ever released.
Acacia’s parents are offering a reward for her safe return. They, and investigators, suspect foul play was involved in her disappearance.
