- Everett Thompson owned a restaurant and lived with his wife Lydia, and their children. Lydia’s brother, Kenneth White, a convicted rapist, moved in with them. The family disliked White, and he was considered a problem.
On July 3rd, Lydia called the police because White threatened her with an axe. The police came but left without making any arrests.
Two days later, on July 5th, Lydia frantically called Everett at work, saying White was chasing her with an axe. Everett left work. He was last seen by a restaurant employee.
Two hours later, White showed up at the restaurant in Everett’s van, claiming Everett was arrested after a car accident. The manager noticed red stains on White’s shoes.
Twelve days later, the family was missing. White told police they’d gone on a surprise trip, but gave different stories about where they went. Police found nothing suspicious, except the family’s van was gone, seemingly supporting White’s lie.
Later, it was discovered White had illegally sold the family home. A home inspector noticed the bathroom fixtures were freshly painted red and the kitchen floor had been replaced – changes made after the police visit on July 3rd.
Police interviewed White multiple times but lacked enough evidence to arrest him. He moved and the FBI later found bloodstained shoes and a sock at his new place. He was eventually arrested for other crimes, and a prosecutor suspected he’d killed his sister’s family to get their house.
White killed himself in jail before revealing anything. Investigators believed he murdered the Thompsons around July 5th or 6th, but without bodies or enough evidence, he was never charged.
